IV sedation is particularly helpful for patients with dental anxiety, but can be used to make just about anyone more comfortable during a dental procedure.
IV sedation requires a special certification which means not every dentist office is able to offer the deepest level of dental sedation. Fortunately, we can!
If you’ve never experienced IV sedation before, you can think of it as being in a dreamlike state. You’ll still be awake and conscious, just not totally present. You may not remember anything from the procedure, but if you do, your memories will be in soft focus. If you have dental anxiety, the less you remember from the treatment, the more likely you are to have a better overall experience and less dental anxiety in the future.
At Galleria of Smiles, we find that our patients most often choose IV sedation for longer or more complex procedures like our Same-Day Smile, dental implant therapy, full-mouth reconstruction, gum recession treatment, or oral surgery.
If you plan to use IV sedation for your dental procedure, you’ll need to arrange a ride home afterward. You’ll be unable to drive as the effects of the sedation wear off. We typically suggest you plan to take it easy the rest of the day.
Oral Sedation And Nitrous Oxide
If you think IV sedation is a bit too much for you, we also offer lighter sedation options to patients who want a little assistance relaxing while in our office. We offer oral sedation and nitrous oxide as two additional sedation options.
Oral sedation comes in a pill form that we prescribe you ahead of time. You’ll take the pill before you arrive at our office so by the time you’re here for your procedure, you’re already totally relaxed. Because the effects may take a while to wear off, you’ll need a ride home from the dental office after your procedure if you plan to use oral sedation.
Nitrous oxide is the lightest type of dental sedation we offer at Galleria of Smiles. With nitrous oxide, you breathe it in and in no time at all, you’ll feel warm, happy, and comfortable. You can drive yourself home after your procedure if you use nitrous oxide because the effects wear off quickly after your treatment is complete.
In addition to our sedation options, we can also use a local anesthetic to numb the part of your mouth we’re working on, so you won’t feel a thing!
