Despite the name, an intraoral camera is not a bulky device; it’s actually relatively compact, typically no larger than a thick marker. Designed to fit comfortably inside the mouth, this advanced tool enables your dentist to capture detailed, high-resolution images of your teeth and soft tissues, providing a clear view of areas that are otherwise difficult to examine closely.
An intraoral camera is a compact, pen-sized optical imaging device used to capture high-resolution, real-time images of the complex and soft tissues within the oral cavity. Unlike radiographs (X-rays), which provide internal visualization of the dentition, alveolar bone, and tooth roots, the intraoral camera focuses on external surfaces, offering detailed visualization of the enamel, gingival tissues, restorations, and oral mucosa.
Because many pathologies, such as microfractures, recurrent decay, gingival inflammation, and marginal deterioration of restorations, may present without immediate pain or visible signs to the untrained eye, intraoral imaging serves as a vital diagnostic adjunct. The camera is connected to a chairside monitor, allowing the clinician to share real-time visuals with the patient, facilitating co-diagnosis, increasing case acceptance, and improving patient comprehension of treatment needs.
Although X-ray imaging has been a cornerstone of dentistry since the 19th century, intraoral cameras have become widespread since the early 1990s. Their adoption has transformed how clinicians communicate with patients and detect early-stage caries, wear, fissures, soft tissue lesions, and defective restorations. At our practice, intraoral cameras are an essential part of our diagnostic protocol, helping us ensure transparency, precision, and patient-centered care.
The camera wand features a lens and a light on one end, and a cord that leads back to the computer on the other. The light on the camera is a crucial component. Even in a brightly lit dental office, it can be hard to see in the darkest parts of your mouth.
The intraoral camera’s brightly lit images help us get a better look at your teeth & gums. Many dental professionals believe this process surpasses traditional tools alone, such as a headlamp and a mirror, when it comes to spotting and diagnosing abnormalities.
An intraoral camera allows us to take great “before & after” pictures. This is especially useful when replacing an old metal filling (called an “amalgam” filling) with a tooth-colored filling (called a “composite” filling). You’ll easily be able to see the huge aesthetic difference that using white, natural-colored fillings can make.
Images of your teeth taken with an intraoral camera can be printed out if needed, but they primarily live in the digital realm.
This makes it very easy to add photos to your digital dental record. We can easily send images to other specialists who might be involved in your care, to dental insurance companies, or to dental lab technicians who are helping craft a custom tooth restoration, such as a crown.
