Here are some frequently asked questions about dental care. Please take a look and feel free to contact us if you would like more information on any of these topics.

Why Are Regular Dental Visits So Important?

Your mouth is constantly evolving, and factors such as what you eat, your habits, age, and even stress levels can impact your oral health. That’s why seeing your dentist regularly (typically every six months) is one of the most important steps you can take to maintain not only a healthy smile, but also your overall well-being.

Many dental issues, such as gum disease, cavities, or even oral cancer, can develop quietly without any pain or visible symptoms in the early stages. Dentists utilize advanced diagnostic tools and years of clinical experience to detect subtle warning signs long before they develop into serious problems.

Some patients may need to visit more frequently than others. For example, if you have gum disease or a history of recurring issues, your dentist might recommend checkups every 3 to 4 months. These recommendations are tailored to your personal needs, as prevention today can mean fewer complications tomorrow.

Why Brushing and Flossing at Home Isn’t Always Enough

Even if you’re brushing and flossing every day (which you absolutely should be), professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar that your toothbrush can’t reach.

Hygienists can clean deeper, remove stains, and polish your teeth to make them smoother and more resistant to future buildup. It’s not just about cleaning, it’s about boosting your long-term oral health.

If you’re unsure about your brushing or flossing technique, don’t worry, we’re more than happy to show you the best practices during your visit.

Brush your teeth twice daily, in the morning and at night, for at least two full minutes each time. Use a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste. Make sure to clean every surface, including the front, back, and chewing surfaces.

Floss once daily to remove food and plaque from between your teeth. Use approximately 18 inches of floss and move to a clean section for each tooth to prevent the spread of bacteria.

Want to take it further? A mid-day brushing session after lunch is always a bonus; your teeth will thank you for it.

Yes. Flossing is essential for cleaning the 30–40% of your tooth surface that a brush simply can’t reach. Even if studies are still evolving, we know this: plaque between your teeth causes decay, bad breath, and gum disease. Flossing clears that away. It’s simple, effective, and makes a significant difference in your long-term oral health.

Absolutely. Even the most diligent brushing can’t fully remove tartar once it hardens. Professional cleanings (called scaling and polishing) are essential for removing stubborn buildup, polishing away stains, and protecting your enamel.

Cleanings also help prevent cavities, maintain your gum health, and enhance the effectiveness of your at-home dental care efforts.

Cavities aren’t just about candy. Any carbohydrate, whether from sweets, fruits, or bread, gets broken down by enzymes in your saliva into sugars. Bacteria in your mouth feed on these sugars and release acid as a byproduct. That acid is what eats away at your enamel, causing tooth decay.

Cavities result from prolonged exposure to this acid, especially if plaque isn’t cleaned away regularly. That’s why oral hygiene and a balanced diet are essential.

Children should visit the dentist by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing, whichever comes first. Early visits help us monitor oral development and build healthy habits from the start.

Before that, gently clean your baby’s gums with a soft, damp cloth after feedings. We’re always here to answer your questions and guide you through every stage of your child’s dental development.

You’re not alone, and we understand. Dental anxiety is very common, and we’re here to help you feel safe, supported, and heard.

Please share your concerns with us before your appointment. We’ll take extra time, explain every step, and even slow down the process if that helps you feel more in control. For patients with more intense fear, we offer sedation options to ensure your comfort.

Our goal is to build trust, so your dental experience feels less like something to dread and more like a path to wellness. You deserve care that’s compassionate and free of judgment. If there’s anything we can do to help, just let us know.
