Digital Impressions

At Galleria of Smiles, we utilize advanced digital impression technology to enhance the precision, comfort, and efficiency of your dental care. Whether you’re receiving restorative treatment or cosmetic enhancements, digital impressions allow us to capture highly accurate, mess-free 3D scans of your teeth, eliminating the need for traditional putty molds. This modern approach streamlines the process, improves fit and results, and ensures a more comfortable experience for both you and our clinical team.

What Is A Digital Impression?

Digital impressions are a modern alternative to traditional dental molds, offering a faster, cleaner, and far more comfortable way to capture a highly accurate, 3D image of your teeth and gums.

Using an intraoral scanner, approximately the size of a large toothbrush, we gently scan your mouth with a specialized light that captures precise digital images in real-time.

These images appear on a computer screen within seconds, allowing both you and your dentist to view your oral structures in remarkable detail.

Gone are the days of biting into uncomfortable trays filled with putty. Traditional impressions, while effective, often triggered gag reflexes, required long hold times, and occasionally led to inaccurate molds due to patient movement. Digital impressions eliminate these issues entirely, improving accuracy and the overall patient experience.

This technology plays a vital role in restorative dentistry, helping us create perfectly fitted crowns, bridges, partial dentures, and dental implants. It’s also essential in orthodontics, particularly for treatments involving clear aligners like Invisalign®, by providing a precise map for planning tooth movement. Whether we’re restoring your smile or helping you straighten it, digital impressions ensure your care is both seamless and personalized.

How Do Digital Impressions Compare to Traditional Impressions?

Digital impressions are not only as accurate as traditional impressions; research suggests they may be even more precise. The advantage lies in real-time imaging: as soon as the 3D scan of your mouth is captured, we can evaluate it instantly.

If any area needs correction, we can re-scan it on the spot, avoiding the delays often associated with conventional methods.

Traditional impressions involve biting into a tray filled with impression material, waiting several minutes for it to set, and then sending that mold to a dental laboratory. There, a technician creates a stone model by pouring ceramic into the mold, which then serves as the foundation for crowns, bridges, or orthodontic treatments.

This manual process, although effective, is time-consuming and prone to minor inaccuracies or distortions, especially if the patient moves or gags during the procedure.

In contrast, digital impressions streamline every step, reduce the risk of error, eliminate discomfort, and dramatically shorten turnaround times for creating restorations or appliances.
