Today, we will be talking about dental crowns. But first, we have a question for you.
Do you remember the ad campaign from a few years ago in which a car company promoted its new line as being “not your father’s” vehicles?
We bring this up about dental crowns for a reason. Dental crowns are an old-school service. They are still used today because they are so effective at fixing a lot of different problems.
And yet, there have been a lot of advances in dental care. You can still get a dental crown, but Galleria of Smiles has invested in technology allows you to receive your crown in a single visit to our dentist office.
The Old-Fashioned Functions Of A Dental Crown
Dental crowns aren’t new by any stretch of the imagination. Archeologists have found historical evidence of people using gold, ivory, and many other things to repair and replace teeth.
In modern dentistry, we have some of the best materials ever developed to create dental crowns. Hundreds of years ago, somewhat fragile porcelain crowns were developed to created more natural-looking teeth replacements.
Since then, people have come up with stronger and more durable ceramics that both look natural and can stand up to the day-to-day function of teeth replacements.
As the materials improved, dental crowns have remained a versatile restorative service that can be used to fix these problems:
⬥ Cracked teeth
⬥ Chipped or broken teeth
⬥ Decayed teeth
⬥ Missing teeth
⬥ Worn-down teeth
Crowns also have cosmetic benefits. A dental crown can replace a tooth that is small, misshapen, or discolored as well.
When your dental crown is bonded in place, your smile will look as good as it did before … or maybe better!
If you have a tooth that is making it hard for you to eat or a tooth that makes you self-conscious about your smile, you owe it to yourself to find out if a dental crown may be able to help.
The New-Fashioned Way To Make A Dental Crown
To understand why we are so excited about what our E4D technology can do for our patients at Galleria of Smiles, first we need to explain the old approach to get a dental crown.
When you are looking to repair a tooth, a dentist first examines it and when appropriate will recommend a dental crown.
After making an impression of your mouth, the dentist will then remove the part of the tooth that is damaged, discolored, or decayed. At the same time, the healthy parts of your tooth will be shaped in a way that creates a foundation that can support your dental crown.
Under the old way of doing things, the dentist would then send the impression to a dental lab. The lab will use the impression to design a dental crown that is the right size and shape for your smile.
This could take several days or weeks depending on how far away the lab is and how many orders are waiting to be completed when yours arrives. When the crown is finished, it will be shipped to your dentist’s office.
Then you will make another appointment to have the crown bonded to your tooth, assuming there is nothing wrong with the fit.
The new way of getting your dental crown requires just one dental visit and a few hours of your time.
At Galleria of Smiles, we can create your crown in our office. Each crown is custom-designed for your smile, and in the off chance that something is wrong, we can fix it in our office, too.
The E4D technology allows us to feed your impression into a computer program. This guides how a block of ceramic is reshaped to create your dental crown with our in-office milling machine.
Once it is ready, we will verify the fit, then bond it to your tooth before you leave. It really can be that simple to restore your smile.
