How To Prepare For Oral Surgery
It’s perfectly normal to feel uneasy before any type of procedure. Since you definitely shouldn’t avoid having surgery if it’s needed, we came up with a guide to make you feel more prepared and less stressed for a necessary procedure.
At Galleria of Smiles, we will work very hard to make you feel as comfortable as possible. The use of sedation dentistry will help you feel completely relaxed and at ease during your procedure. If you properly prepare, you’ll feel a lot less stressed before and after your procedure.
You can follow our guide and use it as a checklist to make sure you’re prepared to undergo oral surgery. Remember, the key is to plan ahead!
Preparing For The Day Of Your Surgery
The day before your oral surgery, you should finalize any plans for the next day. You’ll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment if you’re using any one of our dental sedation options. Because of the side effects, you won’t be able to drive yourself home, so make plans with someone you trust to give you a ride to and from our Sand Springs, OK office.
You should also plan ahead when it comes to your meals. After your surgery, you’ll likely only be able to eat soft foods. Stock your fridge with applesauce, yogurt, and similarly textured foods ahead of time.
For most oral surgeries, you’ll be required to fast for eight to twelve hours before. In most cases, that means you can’t have anything to eat or drink after midnight.
However, if you’re diabetic you should eat breakfast. You should also take your regular prescription medications the night and morning before your surgery.
The Day Of Your Oral Surgery
The day of your oral surgery, you should plan on arriving about 10 minutes early. Leave plenty of time to accommodate any traffic or other issues you may run into.
You should wear short sleeves and dress comfortably. You should also avoid wearing cologne, perfume, or body spray, and remove all jewelry before coming to our office for your surgery.
When you arrive at our Sand Springs, OK dentist office we’ll make sure you feel completely comfortable and informed about the entire procedure. Remember, you’re in good hands at Galleria of Smiles!
Recovering From Oral Surgery
Oral surgery recovery is nothing to stress over! With a bit of preparation, you’ll feel comfortable throughout the recovery process and heal in no time.
Plan to take the rest of the day easy. Avoid exercising or strenuous physical activity. We typically suggest you set up a comfortable spot on the couch or in your bed with your favorite books or magazines to rest.
Stick to eating soft foods that don’t require a lot of chewing. Avoid drinking through a straw and smoking because a sucking motion can create a dry socket and prolong your healing process.
Follow all instruction we give you for postoperative care and make sure to follow-up with us during your next scheduled appointment.
You should take the medication prescribed to you as directed or over-the-counter pain medicine if instructed to do so, to control pain. You can also use an ice pack on the area for 15 minutes at a time to help control swelling.
If you experience bleeding that won’t stop or pain that isn’t getting better with pain medicine, don’t hesitate to call our office. We’re here to help!
